Hazmat safe and prepared to work
How can skippers prevent or control fire or leakage? Fires, leaks or invisible gases can escalate unexpectedly once hazardous materials (hazmat) are involved. Hazmat is related to unique risks on board. React Academy supports mariners with practical knowledge, targeted training and concrete tools to prevent or quickly and safely control incidents.

Hazmat: risks from hazardous substances are everywhere
Hazardous materials (hazmat) skippers transport cargoes every day that exhibit unpredictable behaviour in the event of a fire or spill. Consider:
- chemical vapours spreading in enclosed spaces
- explosion hazard with alternative fuels
- thermal instability of electric vehicles or batteries
- contact between incompatible substances
These situations require customisation and knowledge. One type of foam or procedure does not work for every substance. That is why we train hazmat crews on how to recognise, assess and manage these risks.
Multigas detector on ship: training in recognition and use
A multi-gas detector on a ship is indispensable when working with hazardous substances. But does your crew know:
what they are measuring?
- When should they raise the alarm?
- How do they read and calibrate the detector correctly?
- What personal protective equipment should they wear?
We train crews on board to recognise gases, deploy the ship's multi-gas detector correctly and apply the correct response. This way, the crew does not only rely on technology, but also understands what the measurements mean.
Skipper with hazardous waste: chain awareness
A skipper with hazardous waste bears extra responsibility. It often involves residual streams with unclear contents or varying chemical compositions. We help train the crew in:
- recognising signals in case of leakage or instability
- incident communication protocols
- evacuation and management measures in case of escalation
- Coordination with organisations and gas analysts (gas doctors)
Because the more you know, the better you know when you and your crew should act, and when it is better to call for help.
Prevention is better than cure
That's why React Academy offers four smart training programmes that keep your crew prepared, ready and safe:
- From flexible e-learning (Plan A),
- To train on board with the Trainer Tool (Plan B)
- Tailor-made training on location (Plan C)
- Or start with an inspection with targeted advice (Plan D)
Each plan helps prevent incidents before they escalate and require deployment of the React Emergency Response Team.

Stronger together
React Academy works closely with VanderPers-Maritime's gas experts, globally recognised experts in dangerous goods (DG, IMDG). This collaboration combines our experience in maritime incident response with their in-depth knowledge of hazardous materials. Together, we offer:
- hands-on e-learning for hazmat situations
- Audits and assessments for DG Cargo ships
- tailor-made advice
- Compliance and risk management support
Whether for container ships, inland navigation or waste logistics: we provide clarity in the complex world of dangerous goods.

Safety starts with knowledge and preparation
The combination of technology, procedures and training determines whether a hazardous situation remains manageable. With React Academy, you strengthen your team with knowledge that is directly applicable. On board, in practice. Contact us for advice or training on dangerous goods and fire safety at sea. Together, we build a stronger hazmat safety structure.
